A Leader Driving Change at the Community Level

Operating within Malawi, where many individuals rely on informal savings groups for financial support, Veriam Wellings Magana is at the forefront of tackling one of the most pressing challenges faced by VSL members: poor financial management and debt vulnerability.

With a strong commitment to community transformation, Veriam designed and facilitated the session to address real-life financial challenges faced by participants particularly the risks associated with poor debt management, which often leads to loan defaults and loss of assets.

Equipping Participants with Practical Financial Skills

The training delivered by Veriam was comprehensive, practical, and tailored to the needs of the participants. It covered four key areas essential for financial stability and growth:

Business Management and Entrepreneurship
Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of entrepreneurship, including why starting and sustaining a business is critical for income generation. Veriam highlighted the key qualities of successful entrepreneurs and encouraged participants to identify and leverage local business opportunities.

Debt Management and Responsible Borrowing

Saving Culture and Financial Discipline
Veriam emphasized the importance of consistent saving habits, even with limited income. Participants were introduced to practical strategies such as starting small, saving regularly, and aligning savings with budgeting practices.

Money Management and Financial Awareness
The session also explored how money flows in daily life and business. Veriam guided participants on how to make money circulate productively and use financial resources strategically to create future opportunities.

Transformational Impact on Participants

Under Veriam’s leadership, the session achieved meaningful outcomes. Participants reported improved understanding of entrepreneurship, increased awareness of responsible borrowing, and enhanced knowledge of saving and money management strategies.

More importantly, the training strengthened participants’ confidence in managing their finances and making better economic decisions within their households and businesses.

Overcoming Challenges with Determination

Despite the success of the session, Veriam encountered challenges, particularly low literacy and numeracy levels among some participants. However, through simplified explanations and interactive engagement, Veriam ensured that all participants could grasp the key concepts.

This ability to adapt and connect with diverse learners highlights Veriam’s effectiveness as a Community Finance Leader and a true advocate for inclusive financial education.

A Vision for Sustainable Impact

Beyond the one-day session, Veriam Wellings Magana is advocating for sustained financial education within the community. Key recommendations include ongoing mentorship, regular refresher sessions, strengthening VSL lending policies, and connecting members to formal financial service providers.
