KAFI Community Finance Leader in Malawi Drives Youth Empowerment Through Goat Pass On Project During Global Money Week
By: Wilson Stenala, Malawi
In celebration of Global Money Week under the theme “Smart Money Talks,” a transformative youth driven initiative is gaining momentum in Malawi as a KAFI Community Finance Leader, Wilson Stenala, leads efforts to empower young people through the innovative Goat Pass On Project. This initiative is not only strengthening financial literacy but also creating sustainable economic opportunities for youth through cooperative action and livestock development.
At the heart of this initiative is the Goat Pass On Project, a practical and community centered approach to youth economic empowerment. Designed to promote shared growth and sustainability, the project enables young people to access productive assets while fostering a culture of responsibility, collaboration, and long term financial planning.
The project operates on a simple yet powerful model. Members of a youth led cooperative receive goats as a starting point for livestock farming. Once the goats reproduce, the first offspring is passed on to another member within the network. This system ensures that the benefits of the project continue to expand, reaching more young people over time without requiring constant external support.
Currently, the Goat Pass On Project is being implemented alongside Global Money Week activities, making it a central component of the youth economic empowerment agenda. The timing of this initiative reinforces the importance of connecting financial literacy with real life income generating opportunities. It allows participants to immediately apply what they learn in financial training sessions to practical ventures that can generate income and improve livelihoods.
The project is being driven by a strong network of youth led cooperative members who are actively engaged in both learning and implementation. These young people are not passive beneficiaries but active participants who take ownership of the process. Through their involvement, they are developing not only financial skills but also leadership, teamwork, and entrepreneurial capabilities.
In parallel with the Goat Pass On Project, financial literacy training is currently in progress, involving 20 participants from 20 youth clubs. Each participant represents a broader group, ensuring that knowledge gained is shared within their respective clubs. This creates a multiplier effect, where both financial literacy and the benefits of the goat project spread across multiple communities.
The integration of financial literacy with the Goat Pass On Project is a key strength of this initiative. Participants are learning how to budget for livestock care, plan for future growth, manage income generated from sales, and reinvest profits. This hands on approach ensures that financial concepts are not abstract but directly linked to their daily activities and economic realities.
The Goat Pass On Project also serves as a platform for building financial discipline among young people. Managing livestock requires planning, consistency, and accountability. Participants must ensure that their animals are properly fed, housed, and cared for. They must also make decisions about how to use the income generated, balancing immediate needs with long term goals.
Through this process, young people are developing a deeper understanding of financial responsibility. They learn that income generation is not just about earning money but about managing it wisely to achieve sustainable growth. This aligns closely with the message of Global Money Week, which emphasizes the importance of making smart financial decisions.
Another significant aspect of the project is its contribution to community development. As more members receive goats through the pass on system, the overall economic capacity of the community increases. Families benefit from improved nutrition, increased income, and greater financial stability. This creates a positive cycle where economic gains lead to improved well being and further opportunities for growth.
The cooperative structure supporting the Goat Pass On Project plays a critical role in its success. By working together, members are able to share knowledge, support each other, and address challenges collectively. This sense of unity strengthens the resilience of the group and ensures that the project remains sustainable over time.
Wilson Stenala’s leadership as a KAFI Community Finance Leader has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward. His ability to connect financial education with practical community projects has created a model that is both effective and replicable. By focusing on solutions that are relevant to the local context, he has ensured that the project meets the real needs of young people in his community.
The Goat Pass On Project also highlights the importance of innovation in youth empowerment. Instead of relying solely on traditional forms of support, this initiative leverages local resources and community participation to create lasting impact. It demonstrates that sustainable development can be achieved through simple, well structured approaches that empower individuals to take charge of their own progress.
As Global Money Week continues to inspire action around the world, the work being carried out in Malawi stands as a powerful example of how financial literacy can be integrated with practical initiatives to drive meaningful change. The Goat Pass On Project is more than just a livestock program. It is a pathway to economic independence, a platform for learning, and a catalyst for community transformation.
Looking ahead, there is significant potential to expand the project and reach more youth across different regions. By increasing participation, strengthening cooperative systems, and continuing to provide financial literacy training, the impact of the initiative can be scaled to benefit even more communities.
The vision is to create a network of empowered young people who are financially literate, economically active, and committed to supporting one another. Through the continued success of the Goat Pass On Project, this vision is steadily becoming a reality.
As the message of “Smart Money Talks” resonates throughout Global Money Week, one thing is clear. When young people are given the tools, knowledge, and opportunities to succeed, they rise to the challenge and become drivers of change within their communities.
The Goat Pass On Project is a testament to what can be achieved when financial literacy is combined with practical action and strong leadership. It is a story of empowerment, collaboration, and hope for a brighter economic future for young people in Malawi.
