1. Executive Summary: Building a Financially Literate Generation

Financial literacy is more than understanding money. It is about developing the knowledge, discipline and confidence to make informed financial decisions that shape individual lives, families and communities.

On 14 October 2026, Kick Against Financial Illiteracy (KAFI), through its Malawi initiative, convened the KAFI Financial Literacy Summit at Mzimba Christian Academy, Malawi, bringing together over 200 students and teachers for an engaging financial education experience.

Held under the theme "MY MONEY AND I – Taking Charge of My Money, My Choices and My Future," the summit provided an opportunity for young people to reflect on their relationship with money, understand essential financial principles and recognise the importance of building responsible financial habits from an early age.

The summit was organised as part of KAFI's broader commitment to developing a financially literate, ethically grounded Africa, with particular attention to equipping children and young people with the knowledge needed to participate meaningfully in the financial ecosystem.

The event also formed part of the activities leading up to World Savings Day, celebrated on 31 October 2026.

2. Why the Summit Matters

Many young people encounter financial decisions long before they receive structured financial education.

From managing pocket money and understanding personal needs to developing saving habits and preparing for future financial responsibilities, the ability to make informed decisions is essential.

The KAFI Financial Literacy Summit was designed to bridge this knowledge gap by introducing students to practical financial education in an accessible and engaging environment.

Rather than presenting money as something exclusively associated with wealth, the summit encouraged participants to understand that financial responsibility begins with everyday choices.

Its central message was clear: You do not have to be wealthy to start making better financial decisions. You have to start with knowledge, discipline and intention.

3. Summit Objectives

The summit was guided by three primary objectives:

  1. Build Financial Awareness: Help participants understand their relationship with money and recognise how their decisions influence their financial future.

  2. Promote Responsible Financial Habits: Introduce intentional approaches to earning, spending, budgeting, saving, borrowing and protecting money.

  3. Encourage Practical Action: Challenge every participant to identify and take at least one practical financial action immediately after the summit.

These objectives positioned the event beyond a conventional educational gathering, emphasising practical knowledge and personal responsibility.

4. Over 200 Students and Teachers: A Strong Demonstration of Youth Engagement

With over 200 students and teachers in attendance, Mzimba Christian Academy provided an inspiring environment for financial literacy education.

The gathering demonstrated the importance of taking financial education directly to schools and creating opportunities for young people to engage with essential money-management principles.

The hall was filled to capacity, with learners in their yellow and green school uniforms participating in an environment designed to encourage learning, interaction and financial awareness.

The turnout reinforced an important message: Young people are ready to learn about money when financial education is presented in a way that connects with their everyday experiences and future aspirations.

For KAFI, this gathering represents more than attendance figures. It represents an opportunity to influence how the next generation thinks about, relates to and manages money.

5. The Guest Presentation: MY MONEY AND I

A major highlight of the summit was the presentation delivered by Leader Mphatso Gondwe, Financial Literacy Advocate, who led the central session on the theme, "MY MONEY AND I."

Through an engaging presentation lasting approximately 40–45 minutes, the guest speaker challenged participants to rethink their relationship with money and recognise the importance of personal financial responsibility.

Her central message was:

"Money is a tool. With knowledge, discipline and a plan, we can direct it toward the future we want."

The presentation reinforced the understanding that financial success is not determined solely by how much money an individual earns, but also by the decisions made with the money available.

Participants were encouraged to appreciate that financial empowerment begins with awareness, intentional choices and consistent habits.

6. Key Summit Activities and Learning Sessions

The summit incorporated different learning experiences to make financial education accessible and practical.

Welcome Session: Understanding Our Relationship with Money

The opening session introduced participants to the central theme and encouraged reflection on personal attitudes, decisions and behaviours surrounding money.

Expert Panel: Learning from Industry Perspectives

The expert panel created an opportunity for participants to engage with financial knowledge through questions, discussions and practical insights.

Practical Workshops: Budgeting, Saving and Investing

The workshop sessions introduced participants to essential financial concepts, encouraging them to understand the importance of planning, setting financial goals and making informed decisions.

Networking: Connect, Collaborate and Grow

The networking component encouraged interaction, knowledge-sharing and meaningful connections among participants and other stakeholders.

Together, these sessions supported the summit's objective of making financial literacy relevant to the everyday lives of young people.

7. Six Pillars of Financial Responsibility

One of the central educational outcomes of the summit was the introduction of six essential pillars of personal financial management.

1. Earning: Understanding how money is generated through work, skills, entrepreneurship and productive activities.

2. Spending: Learning to distinguish between needs and wants and making thoughtful purchasing decisions.

3. Budgeting: Developing the ability to plan income and expenses instead of spending without direction.

4. Saving: Building the discipline of setting money aside for future needs, opportunities and emergencies.

5. Borrowing: Understanding responsible borrowing, repayment obligations and the consequences of poor debt decisions.

6. Protecting Money: Recognising the importance of safeguarding financial resources against fraud, unnecessary risks and financial loss.

These six pillars provided participants with a foundational framework for making better financial decisions throughout their lives.

8. Key Outcomes and Impact

The KAFI Financial Literacy Summit achieved its core educational objectives by introducing participants to practical financial knowledge and encouraging a more intentional relationship with money.

The major outcomes included:

  • 200+ students and teachers reached: Providing financial literacy exposure to a large school community in Mzimba.
  • Improved financial awareness: Encouraging participants to understand that managing money begins with intentional decisions, not necessarily with having a large income.
  • Introduction to six financial pillars: Exposing learners to earning, spending, budgeting, saving, borrowing and protecting money.
  • Practical action challenge: Encouraging every participant to identify one financial habit or action to begin immediately.
  • Youth engagement: Creating an opportunity for students to discuss money, financial choices and their future.
  • Institutional visibility: Strengthening KAFI Foundation Malawi's presence as an advocate for financial literacy and youth empowerment.

Beyond the immediate learning experience, the summit contributed to the broader goal of developing financially responsible young people who can influence their families, schools and communities.

9. Connecting the Summit to World Savings Day 2026

The summit's message extended beyond the event itself.

As the world commemorated World Savings Day on 31 October 2026, the KAFI Financial Literacy Summit provided an important reminder that saving should not be treated as an occasional activity but as a deliberate financial habit.

Under the #MyMoneyAndI theme, participants were challenged to take ownership of their financial decisions and begin practising responsible money management.

For young people, this could mean setting aside part of their pocket money, developing a savings target, tracking their expenses or learning to distinguish between needs and wants.

The goal is not simply to encourage people to save money. It is to help them understand why they save, what they are saving towards and how consistent financial habits can create opportunities over time.

10. KAFI Foundation Malawi: Building a Financially Literate Africa

The summit reflected KAFI Foundation's broader vision of a financially literate, ethically grounded Africa.

Through its financial literacy and youth development initiatives, KAFI works to make financial knowledge more accessible, particularly among children and young people.

The professional branding, organised event setup and KAFI Foundation Malawi banners provided a credible and inspiring learning environment that reflected the organisation's commitment to structured financial education.

The summit also demonstrated the importance of local implementation in advancing a continental mission.

By bringing financial education into schools and communities, KAFI continues to create opportunities for young people to develop the knowledge and confidence needed to make responsible financial decisions.

11. Recommendations and the Way Forward

To sustain the impact of the summit and deepen financial literacy engagement among young people in Mzimba, the following recommendations are proposed:

1. Establish School-Based Financial Literacy Clubs

Introduce regular financial literacy activities within schools to encourage continuous learning and practical application.

2. Introduce Student Savings Challenges

Encourage learners to establish realistic savings goals and practise consistent saving habits.

3. Strengthen Financial Education Partnerships

Engage schools, financial institutions, development organisations and community stakeholders to expand access to financial education.

4. Promote Practical Financial Learning

Integrate activities such as budgeting exercises, savings plans and financial decision-making games into future sessions.

5. Expand KAFI's School Outreach

Reach additional schools and communities across Malawi to extend financial literacy education to more children and young people.

6. Monitor Long-Term Learning Outcomes

Introduce follow-up assessments and practical activities to understand how participants apply the financial knowledge acquired.

12. A Call to Action: Your Money, Your Choices, Your Future

The KAFI Financial Literacy Summit 2026 was a reminder that financial empowerment should begin long before adulthood.

A student who learns to save today may become a responsible entrepreneur tomorrow. A young person who understands budgeting may grow into an adult who makes informed financial decisions. A generation equipped with financial knowledge has a stronger foundation for building financially resilient communities.

However, one summit is only the beginning.

Sustained financial education requires collaboration among schools, parents, financial institutions, governments, development organisations and communities.

KAFI invites stakeholders, educators, institutions and partners to join the movement towards a financially literate Africa.

Together, we can ensure that financial knowledge is not a privilege reserved for a few but an opportunity accessible to all.

MY MONEY AND I. My Money. My Choices. My Future.
