Lusaka, Zambia
Alice Hachoofwe, a Community Finance Leader from Zambia and a Fellow of the KAFI Financial Literacy Leadership Fellowship Cohort 8 Group 1, is driving meaningful change in Lusaka through a community wide financial literacy initiative focused on budgeting and its impact on everyday financial wellbeing.
On 25 February 2026, Alice led a multi location community project implemented across Metrocity College, Career Network Office, the Public Market, and through home visits in Lusaka. The initiative brought practical financial education directly to students, professionals, traders, and families, equipping them with essential money management skills to improve their financial decision making and long term stability.
Bringing Financial Literacy Into Everyday Spaces
Alice designed the community project to meet people where they are. By taking financial literacy conversations into colleges, workplaces, markets, and homes, she ensured that budgeting and money management were discussed in real life contexts where financial decisions happen daily.
Through structured presentations, interactive discussions, and practical exercises, participants were guided to reflect on their spending habits and identify opportunities to improve how they manage money. The sessions focused on making budgeting simple, relatable, and actionable for people with different income levels and financial realities.
This approach helped demystify budgeting for participants who previously viewed it as complicated or unrealistic. Alice emphasized that budgeting is not about restriction but about control, clarity, and intentional decision making.
Key Focus Areas of the Community Project
The community sessions focused on budgeting and its impact on financial wellbeing. Participants learned practical skills including
How to create a simple personal or household budget
How to track daily and monthly expenses
How to plan savings consistently
How to set realistic financial goals
How budgeting supports better financial choices and reduces stress
By working through practical examples and exercises, participants were able to apply budgeting principles to their own lives. This hands on learning approach increased understanding and encouraged participants to take immediate steps toward better money management.
Strong Community Engagement and Participation
The initiative recorded strong engagement across all locations. Students showed enthusiasm for learning how to manage limited allowances and plan for school related expenses. Professionals reflected on the importance of tracking spending and aligning budgets with personal goals. Traders at the public market discussed strategies for separating business and personal finances. Families who participated through home visits explored how household budgeting can improve stability and reduce financial pressure.
Across all groups, participants demonstrated a commitment to applying the financial management practices learned during the sessions in their daily lives. Many expressed appreciation for the practical nature of the training and the opportunity to discuss real financial challenges in a supportive environment.
