The Future of Money Is Now

Today, technology is changing money and Africa must be ready.

The way we earn, save, invest, spend and send money is changing rapidly.

Across Africa, financial technology is creating new ways for people and businesses to access financial services, make payments, save, invest, transfer funds and participate in the economy. From digital wallets and mobile payments to fintech platforms and technology enabled financial services, the financial ecosystem is becoming increasingly digital.

But as the tools change, one question becomes increasingly important:

Do people have the financial knowledge to confidently navigate this new world of money?

This is the conversation at the heart of the KAFI Virtual Financial Literacy & Inclusion Series, taking place today, Saturday, 3 October 2026, on Google Meet.

Understanding the New Financial Reality

Technology has moved money beyond traditional banking halls.

Today, someone can receive money digitally, pay for goods from a mobile device, save through a digital platform, invest online or send money across borders without interacting with a traditional financial institution.

These developments create opportunities for greater access and convenience. They can also introduce new risks and responsibilities.

Understanding how financial technology works is therefore becoming an important part of financial literacy.

People need more than access to financial tools. They need the knowledge to understand those tools, evaluate available options, protect their money, recognise opportunities and make informed financial decisions.

This is where financial literacy and financial inclusion meet.

The Conversation Today

The theme for today's session is:

“The Future of Money: How Technology Is Changing the Way We Earn, Save, Invest, Spend & Send Money.”

The session will bring together KAFI Alumni from across Africa as Host, Moderator and Contributors, creating a platform for shared experiences, practical perspectives and meaningful discussion.

The conversation will explore how technology is influencing different aspects of our financial lives.

How are people earning income in an increasingly digital economy?

How are new technologies changing the way we save?

What does digital access mean for investment opportunities?

How are digital payment systems changing everyday spending?

And how is technology making it easier to send and receive money locally and across borders?

These questions are particularly important as Africa's financial ecosystem continues to evolve.

Financial Inclusion in a Digital Age

Financial inclusion is not simply about opening an account or having access to a financial product.

True inclusion also involves the ability to understand, access and responsibly use financial services.

As more financial services become technology driven, financial literacy must evolve alongside them.

A person who has access to a digital financial service but does not understand how it works may not be able to fully benefit from it. Similarly, access without awareness of risks can create new vulnerabilities.

This makes education, awareness and community engagement essential.

The future of financial inclusion will therefore depend not only on technology, but also on people who understand how to use technology effectively.

A Pan African Exchange

KAFI's Virtual Financial Literacy & Inclusion Series provides an opportunity for participants to learn from voices across Africa.

The involvement of KAFI Alumni as Host, Moderator and Contributors reflects the importance of developing a generation of Community Finance Leaders who can engage communities, share knowledge and contribute to conversations shaping Africa's financial future.

Today's session is also supported by Community Partner, SwyChr Global, adding another dimension to the conversation around technology, financial services and inclusion.

The future of money is not something waiting for us years from now.

It is already changing the way people earn, save, invest, spend and send money today.

The question is not whether money is changing. The question is whether we are prepared for the change.
