KAFI Malawi Empowers Learners at Matiya Primary School Through Financial Literacy Outreach

Financial literacy remains one of the most powerful tools for breaking the cycle of poverty in Africa. The KAFI Foundation, driven by the mission to Kick Against Financial Illiteracy, continues to champion this cause by equipping young leaders, children, women, and entire communities with essential financial knowledge and practical skills.

As part of this ongoing mission, KAFI Malawi – Zomba Chapter conducted a transformational outreach visit to Matiya Primary School, delivering practical financial education to learners, teachers, and community members. The visit highlighted KAFI’s commitment to building a financially literate generation capable of making informed financial decisions.

Transforming Young Minds Through Financial Education

Across Africa, many young people grow up without access to basic financial knowledge. Skills such as saving, budgeting, distinguishing between needs and wants, and long-term planning are rarely taught in schools. This gap often leads to poor financial habits and limits future opportunities.

KAFI Malawi is committed to closing this gap. The engagement at Matiya Primary School provided learners with fundamental financial concepts designed to shape their future financial behavior. By introducing financial literacy at an early age, the Foundation is laying the groundwork for a generation that is confident and responsible in managing money.

Leadership in Action: Zomba Chapter Takes the Lead

The outreach was successfully coordinated by the dedicated leaders of the Zomba Chapter:

Victoria Nkhoma, Eunice Louis, and Rejoice Chingagwe all of whom are passionate young leaders and students at the University of Malawi.

During the interactive sessions, learners were introduced to key financial topics. Teachers and community members also participated actively, gaining insights on how to support children in developing healthy financial habits. This community-wide engagement is central to the Foundation’s belief that financial literacy must be a collective responsibility.

Impact on the Community

The visit to Matiya Primary School marks a significant step in strengthening community awareness of financial literacy. Students expressed excitement and curiosity as they learned new concepts that will help shape their personal financial journey.

For many teachers and parents, this initiative filled an important educational gap. It highlighted the importance of introducing financial literacy early and reaffirmed that informed financial decision-making is key to long-term poverty reduction.

The positive reception from the school and community reflects the broader need for sustainable financial education programs across Malawi and Africa.

Commitment to a Financially Literate Africa

This outreach forms part of a larger continental vision championed by the KAFI Foundation’s leadership, including African Director Styford Chisenga Blazio, Country Director Shelil Sheridan & Deputy Coordinator Gabriel Nyondo. Their leadership continues to drive impactful interventions that empower communities and create long-term change.

The dedication of the Zomba Chapter, led by motivated university students, exemplifies the power of youth-led leadership in solving Africa’s most urgent challenges. By combining passion, knowledge, and community engagement, the chapter continues to strengthen KAFI’s presence and impact.
