The session emphasized the importance of non-verbal communication (body language, tone, posture) and how they affect the message being delivered. Personally, I have always been anxious about speaking in public, but I realized that preparation and practice can overcome fear. Moving forward, I intend to participate more in class presentations and group discussions to improve my communication and leadership presence.

I have learnt that communication is one of the most important tools of leadership. A good leader must be clear, confident, and able to inspire others through speaking, listening, and body language. I also learnt that public speaking is not about perfection but about practice, confidence, and connecting with the audience. Most importantly, effective communication helps build trust, solve conflicts, and motivate people to take action.
Chisomo Chimbayo from Malawi. In this module I've learnt that a leader must have the ability to communicate pursuasively, confidently and clearly. This is because even if your ideas are good, they can not create a great impact if you lack communication skills . For leaders, communication is not just about the actual words being spoken, but the body language and facial expressions. It is enivatable for a leader to speak publicly since he or she must address the group that she or he is leading. Therefore a leader must develop effective communication skills which include confidence;that is speaking with assurance and not self doubt. A leader must also adapt to adjust his or her tone while communicating depending on the type of audience. Another effective communication skill is listening more to understand what the audience want or even expect. Not all leaders are comfortable with public speaking, some fear the audience they are to address, some are afraid of making mistakes or even being judged. However this fear can be dealt with by taking time to practice thoroughly to avoid making mistakes, and also knowing your audience to adjust in the right way . Finally, communication for leaders is important because it builds clarity and strengthen collaboration.

It doesn’t matter how brilliant your idea is; if you can’t communicate it others cannot buy the vision. Barriers to effective communication include m; fear, language, cultural differences and distractions. In order to effectively communicate I have to: use simple language, be empathetic, engage audience, listen actively and use appropriate body language.

ReplyDeleteCommunication is indeed not just about talking, it’s about connecting. A good leader should be able to communicate confidently and pay attention to actions of the audience as it may help in understanding if they are getting the message , tired of listening to your talk or interested in the conversation taking place at the moment. To overcome the fear of public speaking we should start small , for example practice speaking on the mirror and notice your facial and body expression to be able to identify if you are confident in what you are saying or not. The more you practice the more confident and self aware of your strengths and weakness you become. Lastly knowing your audience helps in aligning the topic to their interest and attention and it's important to understand that the tone to use depends on the type of audience you have e g children , peers or associates.

ReplyDeleteI have learnt that communication is one of the most powerful tools a leader can have. It goes beyond just speaking — it’s about connecting with people, inspiring them, and creating understanding. As a leader, how you communicate determines how well your team trusts you and how clearly they understand your vision. Good communication builds confidence, respect, and unity within a group, making it easier to achieve goals together.
There are different types of communication — verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual — and each plays a vital role in leadership. For example, verbal communication helps in meetings and presentations, while nonverbal cues like body language and eye contact show sincerity and confidence. I have realised that great leaders are those who listen actively, give clear instructions, and make everyone feel valued.
Personally, I believe learning and mastering public speaking is essential. Being able to express your thoughts confidently allows you to influence others positively and stand firm in what you believe in. This is why it’s important to teach students communication and public speaking skills — so they can express themselves clearly, defend their ideas, and thrive in a world that values confidence and connection. Communication, when done with purpose and empathy, transforms ordinary leaders into impactful and inspiring ones.

Communication is more than words, it's body language, it's visual, and it's written. I'm grasping that people are more willing to listen to 'a human' than 'a figure'. I say this beacuse it's clear than a huge chunk of communication and public speaking is being empathetic, actually listening, and relating your stories to your audience.
Smile, stand tall, be confident, LISTEN, give a call to action at the end of your speech and you'll do incredibly fine is what I'm hearing.
Interesting take away is to trick your brain into thinking you're excited for your presentation instead of fearful, thank you for that!

In summary
I have learned that communication is a skill that every leader must have. Without it, it's impossible to impress and influence others. Communication is not just about what you say, but how you say it. Clarity, eye contact, and body posture reflect confidence, and through that, you gain people's attention. As a young leader, it's crucial to know what to say and when, e.g., in team communication, use "we" instead of "I". For inspirational communication, use stories because people rarely forget. Young leaders need to practice speaking in public, speak confidently for a few minutes, and learn to listen attentively in order to master the communication skill. This is a key to opening doors for more opportunities.

It is said if you can't communicate clearly you are the same as person who can't talk. In this module I have learnt my communication comprises of spoken words, body language and tone while speaking. There are different types of communication; verbal communication, non verbal communication, visual communication and written communication. As a young leader I should embrace speaking with clarity not use jargon, speak with confidence, show empathy, actively listen, allow feedback and be able to adjust depending on my audience. The only way to become good public speaker is to practice. Speech is made of 3 parts; opening I can use a quote or ask question, body -where main points are presented and conclusion summarise with a call to action or inspiring quote.Communication will vary depending on context could be; team , conflict, inspiration or cross-cultural. In practising public speaking I should know my audience, research, use visual aids wisely, practice story telling and engage audience. Tools to use in becoming a good public speaker mirror practice, listening challenge and speech rehearsals. While teaching students public speaking can use debate sessions, speech competitions, role plays, presentation challenge and encourage peer feedback. In conclusion as good public speaker should speak with clarity, listen with empathy and lead with authenticity.

COMMENT: I have learned that while communication and public speaking are essential for every leader, it is also important to recognize that context matters. it is not just about talking, but it's about communicating clearly in a way that speaks to the lives of others. despite having the ability to talk does not qualify you to engage directly with the public, in preparation for any public speaking, one needs to research his/her audience, the topic of discussion enables you know the language to use , understanding their needs, worries and concerns will help you deliver a message that connects and speak to the life's of people just like the model Nelson Mandela who is forever remembered in our todays world.
From this lesson, I have learn that strong communication is a key part of being an effective leader. It teaches me that leadership is not only about having good ideas but about sharing them clearly and listening to others with respect. It also reminds me that being genuine and true to myself makes my message more powerful. As I grow, I should use my voice to motivate and uplift otherscreating positive change.

The topic will teach the leadership tool of communication and public speaking, enabling young people to clearly share their ideas with inspiration and build influence. Communication is much more than mere words; it embodies tone, body language, the art of listening, and empathy, all critical elements for leaders to build trust, avoid misunderstandings, and relate meaningfully with their targeted audience. Public speaking-although related to fear-becomes powerful when executed confidently, clearly, and authentically, through storytelling, eye contact, and strong posture, which helps in the engagement of listeners. Great leaders adjust their style of communication according to the contexts at hand, whether teams, conflicts, inspiration, or cross-cultural communications, but always with a focus on connecting and never on merely talking. Practical skills include preparing well, knowing your audience, using visual aids judiciously, and regular practice that helps to overcome nervousness and weakness in delivery. In schools and youth clubs, activities such as debates, role plays, speech competitions, and peer feedback circles make communication training interactive and confidence-building. The ultimate lesson is that words can transform lives: spoken with clarity, empathy, and conviction, they turn ideas into action and turn young people into leaders who educate, motivate, and inspire their communities.

ReplyDeleteCommunication is the process of sharing information, ideas, and emotions in a way that others can understand and respond to. Effective communication skills are important because they build trust and foster credibility. There are four types of communication: verbal, non-verbal, written, and visual. Great communicators utilize all these forms to communicate effectively, demonstrating clarity, confidence, and active listening.
Public speaking is the art of addressing a group of people to persuade and inspire them. However, public speaking comes with challenges such as fear of failure, making mistakes, fear of rejection, and a lack of confidence. Speakers can overcome these fears by practicing their speeches, recognizing that the audience wants them to succeed, and preparing thoroughly.

Good communication is essential for leadership. It starts with giving clear feedback and communicating expectations openly. When dealing with conflict, stay calm, focus on the issue—not the person—and listen actively. To inspire others, share real stories, speak with passion, and connect emotionally. When communicating across cultures, show respect, avoid insensitive language, and try to understand the other person’s perspective.
For public speaking, know your audience, prepare well, practice your key points, and use visual aids carefully. Tell stories, engage the audience, and always evaluate your performance to improve.
Young leaders can build communication skills through simple exercises like mirror practice, one-minute talks, active-listening challenges, story circles, and recording speeches for self-review.
In schools, KAFI Hub Leaders can make communication training fun and practical through debates, speech competitions, role plays, presentation challenges, and peer feedback sessions. SUMMARY OF WHAT I LEARNED
From this module, I learned that communication is a core leadership skill that shapes how effectively we inspire, guide, and influence others. Leadership is not just about having ideas, but about expressing them clearly, confidently, and in a way that connects with people. I now understand that communication involves verbal, non-verbal, written, and visual elements, and great leaders use all these forms to build trust and convey their message with impact.
I learned that effective communication requires clarity, confidence, empathy, active listening, and the ability to adapt to different audiences. Public speaking is one of the strongest leadership tools, and the fear that many people feel can be overcome through practice, preparation, and focusing on the message rather than personal anxiety. A powerful speech has a strong opening, clear points, and an inspiring conclusion.
The module also taught me how communication works in leadership situations such as teamwork, conflict resolution, and cross-cultural environments. I learned practical techniques using body language, storytelling, engagement, and feedback to improve my speaking skills.
Finally, I gained ideas on how to teach communication in schools through debates, presentations, role plays, and storytelling. Overall, this module strengthened my ability to communicate with clarity, confidence, and authenticity skills that every young leader needs to influence positive change.

Communication is key to a successful relationship. Communication is a key that opens doors, communication is a skill that you develop within you.
Listen to understand before you respond is a show of good communication. There are many types of communication, the way you communicate with people, is the way they'll respond to you, respect is reciprocal.
Start little to build your communication skill, by talking in front of 10 members and you'll increase the number as goes, as you see how confident you're becoming.
Good leader is shown by the way they communicate with other people. Being a leader doesn't make you better than anyone, or even doesn't give you a right to communicate at any how with other people.

Communication is a way of sharing ideas and emotions in a way that your audience understands and gives feedback.
Communication and public speaking are soft skills which are leadership tools for influence, opening up opportunities and leading to transformation. One should have the ability to speak confidently, and with clarity. Communication gives clarity, reduced misunderstandings, builds credibility, and motivates others. Messages can be passed verbally through speech, non-verbal, written, or visualized. Great leaders are able to use all these types of Communication to pass their messages effectively.
For messages to captured by audience effective, we need to speak with confidence without showing our anxiety, clarity, empathy, adjust our style depending on the audience and message, listen and seek feedback or questions.
Public speaking is an opportunity to inform, persuade, motivates, inspire and influence. Many often feat to be judged, making errors, forget the message we prepared or generally fear the audience before us. However, these can be overcome with practice overtime. A good speech should open with good hook to capture attention, a clear message as the body and conclusive with a call to action that can be easily remembered by the audience. We should mind our body language and tone when speaking as they communicate a message also.
When communicating on behalf of a team, use "we" instead of personalizing the message with "I". It is good to know your audience and prepare for your speech prior, use visuals that make your message clear, engage your audience instead of talking throughout. Evaluate your speech after and identify areas of improvement. As leaders, we should communicate not only to inform but to transform.
